Canelo vs. Golovkin Fight News: Canelo Camp Begins Word War Against Golovkin; Veteran Broadcaster Sees Bout Happening In 2017
The camp of Mexican middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has begun the trash-talking against fellow 160-pound world champion Gennady Golovkin.
Right after he defeated Miguel Cotto in mid-November and bagged the Lineal, Ring Magazine and WBC middleweight titles, the buzz behind Alvarez's potential fight with Golovkin has been louder. Alvarez himself even indirectly called out Golovkin during his post-fight interview, noting he would be open to fighting any given time.
Recently, Alvarez's coach Eddie Reynoso spoke about the undefeated Kazakh boxing sensation. In a report by Boxingscene, Reynoso first criticized the attention "GGG" has been getting. For him, it may be a little too overboard.
"Golovkin is a great fighter and we ackowledge that, but he is not the wonder that everyone believes he is," Reynoso said. "We also have a great boxer." Golovkin (34-0, with 31 victories by knockout) holds the IBO, WBA (Super), and IBF world middleweight titles.
He also holds the WBC interim 160-pound title, making him a strong and viable candidate as Alvarez's next opponent. He last saw action in October against Canada's David Lemieux, where he won by eighth round technical knockout.
Alvarez, on the other hand, holds a 46-1-1 win-loss-draw slate, with 32 victories ending by knockout.
As far as the match-up goes, no major developments have been made, and no dates have been determined. But for former HBO broadcast panelist and veteran boxing figure Larry Merchant, it may take a while before the fight materializes.
In another report by Steve Kim of Boxingscene, Merchant foresees the fight happening in 2017.
"I kind of think it will happen maybe in 2017, which is what, fourteen, fifteen months away?" Merchant said, according to the report. He adds that Alvarez will need to fight a few more fights as the match-up with Golovkin still needs to build up.
"People have to really start clamoring for it, and Canelo has shown a willingness to step up," Merchant explained.
