CM Punk Latest News: Analyst Joe Rogan Says Punk Fighting In The UFC Is 'Ridiculous'
Veteran UFC analyst Joe Rogan has cast doubts over former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar turned MMA fighter CM Punk.
The 37-year-old Punk (whose name is Phil Brooks in real life) was officially signed by the UFC in December 2014, to the mixed reactions of many fighters in the roster. Punk had no prior mixed martial arts experience and is a white belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
But eventually, many warmed up to the idea and he was taken by renowned coach Duke Roufus to train alongside the likes of former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and reigning ONE Championship welterweight champion Ben Askren at the Roufusport Academy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Punk was scheduled to have his UFC debut at the end of 2015, but a shoulder injury derailed the said plans. For their part, the UFC has already picked an opponent for him, fellow MMA newbie Mickey Gall, a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and is fighting out of New Jersey.
However, Punk's debut may have to be pushed back once again as he has suffered a herniated disc in his back that required surgery.
Most recently, Rogan weighed in on Punk's UFC signing, where he says the said move by the company was "ridiculous."
"I don't know what's going to happen with that guy," Rogan said in a recent episode of his podcast 'The Joe Rogan Experience. "I don't understand this whole thing. Well, I also think it's ridiculous for him to fight in the UFC."
Rogan adds that given Punk's zero experience in professional mixed martial arts, taking on a UFC fight for his debut would be too big of a move, noting that he should at least fight under smaller promotions first.
"I think he should fight in a small organization. Take a fight in a small organization, build yourself up. I have always said that's what should have happened with Brock Lesnar."
