Critical Update, Old Kindle Paperwhite (2012), Older Versions: TODAY or Be Disconnected
Amazon is urging its Kindle customers who own old Kindles to subscribe to a critical update on or before March 22, 2016, or risk being locked out of the Kindle Store as well as Cloud. The software update allows users of Kindle E-Readers to download Kindle books from Cloud, get into and browse in the Kindle Store, and access other Kindle services. Without the update, purchased material such as books or documents in the Kindle Library can no longer be accessed.
The warning is directed at users of Kindle device models from 2012 and earlier. The critical update will automatically download and install for as long as the device is connected to Wi-Fi. A device which has been tuned off or unplugged, or disconnected from the Internet may not update automatically, in which case, its power should be turned on. And to prompt it to connect to the update, "Sync and Check for Items" should be clicked on in the menu.
For those who do not catch the software update today, this message will be received: "Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again. If the problem persists, please restart your Kindle from the Menu in Settings and try again." The device will have to be updated manually. The update file can be accessed from Amazon and saved into the Kindle device.
Affected models are the following: Kindle First Generation-2007, Kindle Second Generation-2009, Kindle DX Second Generation-2009, Kindle Keyboard Third Generation-2010, Kindle Fourth Generation-2011, Kindle Fifth Generation-2012, Kindle Touch Fourth Generation-2011, and Kindle Touch Fifth Generation-2012.
When accessing the Amazon website, the instructions for the appropriate generation device must be selected in order to download the matching software version. A USB device can be used to save the file downloaded, and the file can then be transferred into the Kindle Device.
Receiving the confirmation letter "03-2016 Successful Update" on the device signals the completion of the update. The letter can be found by browsing recent items in the Kindle Library.
The Amazon website does not say what the software update really does or fixes.
