New England Patriots NFL 2015 News, Rumors: Darrelle Revis and a $20 Million Problem
About a year ago Darrelle Revis was looking for a job. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had cut him and he needed to find a team willing to pay him and have him in their locker room. The New England Patriots stepped up and gave him a lucrative deal that has been widely reported as a one year deal.
The Patriots added a $20 million option as a place holder possibly for salary cap concerns. They would like to keep him but $20 million is a lot of money to invest in any one player who does not play the Quarterback position.
On top of all that Revis is likely going to want to cash in. His stick is never going to be higher and this off season he has the added leverage of playing for the reigning chaps and the extra salary that would bring him as other NFL clubs look to weaken the team at the top of the NFL mountain, Pro Football Talk reported.
The thing to remember here is that sports is a business and this is Revis' best chance to set himself up for the rest of his life. He owes it to himself and to his family to get every dollar he can.
On the other side the Patriots cannot give up that kind of cap space for one defensive player. A long term deal between the two is the best possible scenario for both sides (and their fans) but the Patriots may have to overpay to keep Revis from one of their divisional rivals. One thing is certain Revis will likely receive a long term contract with far more than $20 million guaranteed.
