'Dirty Dancing' Remake Release Date, Details: New Movie Premieres May 24 at ABC Network
ABC Network's television remake of the popular dance drama movie "Dirty Dancing" is set to air on May 24. The TV movie is in partnership with Lionsgate Television and its first teaser poster has just been released, featuring "Scream Queens" actress Abigail Breslin with Colt Prattes ("Rock of Ages") as the leading couple.
Breslin and Prattes play Baby and Johnny - the couple who fell in love on the dancefloor. Baby is a young woman who was vacationing at the Catskill Mountains with her parents when she met the dancing instructor, Johnny, and fell in love.
The teaser poster, released by Breslin herself through her Instagram feed, was captioned, "Nobody puts Baby in the corner," with the hashtag, DIRTY DANCING.
The poster was reminiscent of the pose that was made famous by Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze during their final dance from the 1987 original movie.
In an interview with Out Magazine, Breslin shared that "it was the most magical experience" she ever had, adding that everybody in the cast and crew were incredible.
The actress also explained that the upcoming "Dirty Dancing" television movie is more of a reimagining and not merely a reenactment, saying that her role as Baby is not just an imitation of Grey's legendary portrayal from the original. "I don't believe that stories are only meant to be told once. You can tell them differently," Breslin said.
The television movie has a runtime of three hours and is directed by Wayne Blair with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler. It will also feature the popular 80s songs from the original movie, including the hit track, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1987.
Breslin and Prattes are joined by cast Debra Messing as Jennifer's mother, Bruce Greenwood as Jennifer's father, and Nicole Scherzinger as Penny. It also stars Sarah Hyland, Katey Sagal and Billy Dee Williams.
