'Dishonored: Death of the Outsider' Review: Critics Weigh In on Franchise's Latest Installment
Bethesda and Arkane Studios didn't have to wait long enough to release a new "Dishonored" game, and with "Dishonored: Death of the Outsider" having just been released a few days ago, one might wonder how it compares to the previous installments of the franchise.
"Dishonored: Death of the Outsider" explores the story of Billie Lurke (voiced by Rosario Dawson) as she goes on a quest to fully end the chaotic entity known as the Outsider. Although it immediately follows events of "Dishonored 2," the game can be considered a standalone. Now, after it was released last Sept. 15, the reviews for the game are finally here, and thankfully, it's mostly positive.
Many reviews had argued that "Death of the Outsider" didn't really match up to its predecessor, "Dishonored 2," but nevertheless, it had still provided a highly enjoyable game to play and a great follow-up nonetheless. Most of the praise went to the changes made with the game as compared to its predecessor. One such change is the removal of the Chaos system that greatly influences the outcome of the entire game. This removal, in turn, had made side missions more accessible to the players without thinking about the repercussions these missions may have on the game's ending.

A review from IGN, which gave the game a score of 8.4, explained that removing the Chaos system and the consequences that came with it had encouraged players to experiment more and explore more of what the game has to offer.
"Death of the Outsider" had made a strategic decision to have the Void energy bar be refilled after a short interval, and it looks like this new feature was greatly appreciated by some as it has provided them the opportunity and the freedom to explore Lurke's abilities more.
Billie Lurke's abilities were both given proper praise and disappointments. While her new abilities, "Displace," "Semblance," and "Foresight," were deemed refreshing by some, there are those who think that the character lacked the "coolness" the previous protagonists' abilities had to offer.
Another disappointment that the game had brought was the storyline as there are some who felt as if the ending, specifically killing a god is rather "unearned."
Overall, the standalone "Dishonored: Death of the Outsider" received generally positive reviews from critics with most agreeing that the predecessor was better, especially in terms of the stealth tactics it had offered, but that it was also still a worthy follow-up.
IGN and Game Spot both gave "Death of the Outsider" a great score of 8.4 and 8, respectively. Online news entities such as The Guardian and Independent both gave the game a 4-star rating out of 5. As for Metacritic, the review site gave "Death of the Outsider" a score 83, citing generally favorable reviews. However, not all seemed impressed with the game like PC World which gave it 3 out of 5 stars.
