Disney Keen on Making 'Wolverine' Reboot; 'X-23' Spinoff Movie to Be Abandoned?

Disney has just acquired most of 20th Century Fox's key assets, and it looks like the studio is now ready to move forward with the "Wolverine" reboot. However, rumor has it that it is abandoning the "X-23" spinoff movie, which is currently in the very early stages of development.

Now that Disney's merger with 21st Century Fox is finally a closed deal, Disney is reportedly in the process of deciding which Marvel projects and franchises to pick up and which to abandon. Although it was confirmed back in October that the "X-23" spinoff of the blockbuster "Logan" was already in the works and that the script for the movie was already being worked on, reports following the multi-billion merger suggest that Disney might no longer continue developing the project.

According to reports, while the "Deadpool" franchise will not be affected by the recent merger, the future of the rest of the "X-Men" franchise is now uncertain. Although the "X-23" spinoff movie might no longer seeing the light of the day, the good news for "X-Men" fans is that Disney's current priority is figuring out the best way for Wolverine to slash his way into the ongoing saga and reboot the franchise.

Following Hugh Jackman's retirement as the iconic character, Disney is reportedly looking to cast a new Logan/Wolverine in the "Wolverine" reboot. This move will shed the two decades-worth of Fox's X-Universe character development and give birth to a new interpretation of Wolverine.

The studio has yet to decide who will fill Jackman's shoes as the clawed hero, but whoever he is, he certainly has big shoes to fill. Jackman's portrayal of the character for more than a decade was one of the reasons the "X-Men" franchise was a hit, and the new actor to take his place might have a hard time living up to what fans have seen over the years.

The "X-Men" franchise is set to release three movies next year, including "The New Mutants," "Deadpool 2" and "X-Men: Dark Phoenix."
