Domino's New Pizza Delivery Boy Is a Robot?!
Domino's Pizza has been testing out its new delivery system in Australia, which takes the form of a robot.
It was reported that Australians got the first look into Domino's Robotic Unit (DRU), which is the first commercial autonomous delivery vehicle in the world.
As stated by Lifehacker, the robot was created in partnership with an Australian startup called Marathon Robotics, a group that is known for developing devices for army training.
The DRU was able to delivery pizza to people all around Australia during a GPS technology that conects with Google Maps. The device's speed can go as fast as 20 kilometers per hour (about 12.4 mph). In addition, it can navigate itself through different obstacles with the use of LIDAR technology. This will allow the device to stay in control while delivering pizzas.
According to IGN, the CEO of Domino's, Don Meji, explained, "He's able to stop and sense and won't hit things, but [it] needs to be more foolproof. For example, he's not currently aware of how big he is on top which can be a problem when he spins."
While the Domino's new delivery system will only go up to the curb in front of the address, it was stated that customers will be able to hold a conversation with the device while collecting the order. However, the device can only hold up to one average sized pizza. In addition, it will be unable to deliver to long distances since it is not allowed on the highway.
Despite this, Meji assured that the device is completely safe. He said, "One of our inspirations for DRU is safety — it seems pretty crazy to us that we use one-and-a-half tonne vehicles to deliver a few hundred grams of pizza."
However, the device is still in its testing phase and customers can expect more development and improvement as the testing continues.
