'Duck Dynasty' Family News: Al and Lisa Robertson Release New Memoir, Reveal Details of Past Troubles in Marriage
Duck Dynasty's Al and Lisa Robertson are coming clean in a new memoir, "A New Season: A Robertson Family Love Story of Brokenness and Redemption."
In an advance copy of the book obtained by E! News, Lisa revealed that she met Al back when she was in sixth grade and he was in eighth grade, and she writes that her infatuation with Al at such a young age stems from the molestation that she suffered as a child at the hands of a male relative, which she says started when she was 7 and continued until she was 14.
"It was the driving force behind some people might have considered inappropriate," she wrote. "Consciously I think I felt I was supposed to have a 'man' in my life to please."
Lisa also revealed that she dated a boy "old enough to buy alcohol and drugs" and got pregnant before her 17th birthday. She decided to have an abortion, a decision which she regrets to this day.
Al also had his own demons to fight as he wrote about living "a double life" as a young man and having an affair with a married woman. He was also taking speed and drinking heavily, and after a confrontation with the woman's husband, he decided to come home to his family.
Lisa and Al reconciled and had two children, but they also revealed that Lisa had a 14-month affair back in the 1990s that almost destroyed their marriage.
Al spoke about the affair in an interview with Us Weekly.
"It was one of the most difficult things our family has ever gone through … What I will say is once I made the decision that I was in a place where I could forgive Lisa and I wanted our marriage to work, [his family] got onboard behind me … And now we're very close and they're very close to her," he said.
Lisa connects her infidelity to her childhood abuse and wrote, "As we have spoken with other couples whose marriages have suffered an affair, we have learned that a sinister bond exists between abuse and fidelity."
As for writing about the abortion and the affair, Lisa told Us Weekly, "I thought it was important to include because there are people out there who this has happened to."
"And I thought it was a very unique thing for somebody who is in our position to say, 'Look, I did this. And you can find healing and comfort from Jesus in it," she said.
