'Fear the Walking Dead' Season 2 News, Spoilers: AMC Gives 'TWD' Spinoff the Green Light for a Third Season

Just days after airing its eagerly awaited season 2 premiere, AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" has been renewed for a third season.

The zombie horror drama, a spinoff/prequel of AMC's "The Walking Dead," aired a tentative freshman season in 2015, which consisted of just six episodes. After receiving generally positive reviews, AMC increased the current season order to 15 episodes. The third season, which will air in 2017, marks the largest season order yet, consisting of 16 episodes.

In a statement about the show's renewal on Friday, April 15, AMC president Charlie Collier wrote (via The Hollywood Reporter), "What Dave Erickson and Robert Kirkman have invented in 'Fear the Walking Dead' is to be applauded."

He added: "Watching Los Angeles crumble through the eyes of our characters and seeing each make decisions and try to figure out the rules of their new world — it's fresh, eerie and compelling and we're all in for the ride. As Victor Strand observed, 'The only way to survive a mad world is to embrace the madness.' We thank the millions of fans for embracing this mad world and look forward to sailing far into the future."

Apart from renewing "Fear the Walking Dead," AMC also announced that the series will once again be accompanied by its live aftershow "Talking Dead: Fear," which currently airs after every new episode. The post-"FTWD" talk show will continue to be hosted by Chris Hardwick.

The season 3 renewal of "Fear the Walking Dead" ensures that AMC airs a zombie drama throughout the year. It also marks the expansion of "Walking Dead" comic book series author Robert Kirkman from comics to the small screen. Kirkman, who executive produces "The Walking Dead," is also an executive producer on "Fear the Walking Dead."

In the next episode of "Fear the Walking Dead," titled "Ouroboros," Madison (Kim Dickens) confronts Strand (Colman Domingo) about his secret destination as Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Nick (Frank Dillane), and the rest of the group investigate the wreckage from a plane crash.

"Fear the Walking Dead" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
