Feminist Taylor Swift Parody Account Sweeps Twitter

A new account on Twitter intended to imitate Taylor Swift but incorporated with feminist views is sweeping the social media site this week.

The microblogging site hosts over 500 million registered users, including many other humorous parody accounts. However, the Taylor Swift feminist account, known as the handle @feministtswift, is getting the most attention by far of any other user on the site this week.

Brown University student Clara Beyer created the parody account based on the personality of the country music darling.

Known for penning break-up songs involving many emotional lyrics, Swift became the perfect inspiration behind @feministtwift. Using the social media site, Beyer and her friend Kevin Carty blend Swift's emotionally-charged, love scorned lyrics with social issues such as gender equality and sexual identity.

The first post to the account occurred last Wednesday and stemmed from lyrics of Swift's hit "You Belong To Me."

"She wears short skirts / I wear t-shirts / Neither of us is asking for it," read the tweet.

Another post, inspired by Swift's song "Love Story" read: "You were Romeo, you were throwin' pebbles / and my daddy said 'Stay away from Juliet' / But I'm a grown woman who can make her own decisions."

The parody account has already accumulated over 16,000 followers within 24 hours of the first post.

Although Swift is not behind the Twitter handle, the singer has addressed feminism in a past interview with The Daily Beast.

"I don't really think about things as guys versus girls," said the 23-year-old. "I never have. I was raised by parents who brought me up to think if you work hard as guys, you can go far in life."

Alternately, Beyer said that not only is she a feminist, that she is a Taylor Swift fan, and blending the two together on Twitter has been a joy.

"I consider myself a feminist, and I blog about that kind of thing all the time, but I also LOVE Taylor Swift," the blogger told BuzzFeed. "Being a feminist Taylor Swift fan isn't always easy, but it led to @FeministTSwift, so I'm not really complaining."

Meanwhile, Swift has over 30 million followers on Twitter, but Beyer said her goal is to equal that amount with @feministTSwift.
