Ford GT Competition Series Release Date, Specs News: Lighter, More Track-Ready Supercar Introduced
The Ford GT Competition Series, a limited-edition model that is more lightweight and track-ready than the already very capable Ford GT, was recently introduced by the American automaker.
"The Ford GT has racing in its blood. The Competition Series was developed with the most hardcore track enthusiasts in mind, providing a tailored set of lightweight features and unique livery to match," said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, global product development and chief technical officer.
The special Competition Series model was able to reduce its overall weight through the use of components like the Perspex acrylic engine hatch cover with a manual latch and carbon fiber prop rod, a slimmer and lighter Gorilla Glass bulkhead, carbon fiber wheels, titanium lug nuts and a titanium exhaust system.
The addition of these lightweight components allows the two-seat supercar to have a center of gravity that is much closer to the track for better handling and the maximization of its 647-horsepower 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine.
Like the Ford GT, the Competition Series comes standard with a FIA-certified steel roll cage and an active aerodynamic system. Meanwhile, the more track-ready variant also removes some of the standard equipment that are not directly tied to the sports car's performance. The removed components include air-conditioning, radio, speakers, storage compartments and cup holders.
Design-wise, the Ford GT Competition Series features high-glass carbon fiber accents on the exterior, as seen in the supercar's stripe, mirror caps and A-pillars. The lower part of the vehicle also has a glossy carbon fiber trim.
Inside, the cabin has been infused with lightweight, carbon fiber elements on the center console, registers and door sills. There are also anodized red accents on the paddle shifters and instrument panel badge.
The Ford GT Competition Series retains the original model's driver-centric layout with a steering wheel inspired by Formula One and Ebony Alcantara suede upholstery on the seats, instrument panel and headliner.
The Ford GT Competition Series can be availed in six colors — Shadow Black, Frozen White, Ingot Silver, Liquid Blue, Liquid Grey and Triple Yellow.
