'Game of Thrones' News: Fifth Prequel Confirmed With Acclaimed Writer and EP of the Original Series

A fifth "Game of Thrones" prequel has been confirmed, and it will be written mainly by another acclaimed writer who has been working on the show since season 1.

The writer who George R.R. Martin referred to as the prince of Dragonstone is no less than Bryan Cogman.

Fans will recall that a few months ago, HBO confirmed that they were working on four "Game of Thrones" prequel releases. Shortly after the news broke, Martin went to his blog and teased that a fifth project was likely to be added.

Aside from having a fifth prequel project, Martin also raised the expectation by referring to the then unnamed writer as a "terrific addition."

A recent report from Entertainment Weekly said that the writer Martin had referred to was Cogman. He is also known as one of the co-executive producers of "Game of Thrones."

The report added that Cogman was working on the script for the fifth prequel project with the "A Song of Ice and Fire" saga author, Martin.

After the news was confirmed, Martin wrote a new post on his LiveJournal page to reiterate what he had already teased earlier: "Truth be told, we've had five scripts in various stages of development for months."

Martin stated in his blog that Cogman's name should definitely be recognizable to any "Game of Thrones" fan, especially since he has been with the show from the start and "before the beginning."

To give emphasis on just how deep Cogman's attachment is to the making of the phenomenal HBO series, the best-selling author also recalled that the former was hired as an assistant to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, even before the first "Game of Thrones" episode went on air and "before even the pilot had been filmed."

"From those humble beginnings, he advanced to staff writer, to story editor, to co-producer and producer and supervising producer. Less formally, he has also been GOT's 'Keeper of the Lore,' the guy who knew the canon better than anyone (except me, though sometimes I am not even sure of that)," Martin added.

As for which Westeros storyline Cogman and Martin are working on, Martin only had this to say: "I can say that, like the other pilots, it will be a prequel rather than sequel, a successor rather than a spinoff. Bryan's series will be an adaptation, and one that will thrill most fans of the books, I think, set during a very exciting period of Westerosi history."
