Clooney, who is a successful actor, film producer and humanitarian activist, gushed about his accomplished wife to be.

"I'm marrying up," Clooney told Variety magazine.

The couple is expected to tie the knot in Venice on September 20, 2014, however, Clooney is said to have decided against holding the wedding at his Lake Como estate due to privacy. The highly anticipated event would likely cause chaos and inconvenience the locals, the New York Post reported.

"George and Amal want to be married in Italy, but they need a location that offers them and their guests privacy," a source told Page Six.

The pair got engaged six months after they began dating and insiders claim they are growing more in love each day as the wedding nears.

On June 22, Clooney's parents along with Alamuddin's mother Baria reportedly gathered at the Hollywood actor's 18th-century villa. The first time meeting between the families went very well and sources claim there was some discussion about Clooney's upcoming wedding to Alamuddin.

"They were outside, and Amal and her mom were smiling," a source told People. "It was going pretty great."

The couple first stepped out together publicly during an outing in London in October last year, three months after Clooney's split from former pro-wrestler Stacy Keibler. They have since enjoyed a number of globe-trotting jaunts including a trip to Tanzania and New York City.

Clooney is passionate about humanitarian work and he has been at the forefront of advocacy for resolving the war in Darfur. Alamuddin, who was born in Beirut and raised in England, also has a philanthropic background.

The Lebanese-born human rights lawyer is currently representing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and is an adviser to Kofi Annan, the special envoy to Syria.

Clooney's mother Nina, 74, previously described Alamuddin as having a nice blend of "brains and beauty."

"We weren't at all surprised when they told us they were engaged, and we couldn't be happier for them," Nina said.

"On an intellectual level, they are equals. That is very important to him. Amal's world couldn't be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle," she explained.
