In response to Hurricane Katrina, the Salvation Army in Georgia has deployed mobile feeding units to deliver crucial support to Katrina hurricane victims, emergency aid workers and volunteers in affected areas while hundreds more in the area are on standby.
Hurricane Katrina, which has downgraded into a topical depression, swept through the Gulf Coast states on Monday and has left a path of destruction. According to the latest reports, eighty percent of New Orleans, La., is under water due to broken levee water pumps, hundreds estimated to be dead in Biloxi, Miss., and more than one million are without power.
On Monday, the hurricane was also responsible for spinning off tornadoes and other storms in Georgia damaged dozens of buildings and leaving one person dead.
All Salvation Army units Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi were activated to coordinate and stock mobile canteens. Through the Mobile Feeding Units, which each has the capacity to serve 5,000 meals per day, the Salvation Army is planning to serve over 400,000 meals to hurricane victims and aid workers.
The Salvation Army is coordinating the efforts with Federal Emergency Management Agency and collaborating with other disaster response groups such as Operation Blessing and the American Red Cross.
More than 200 Salvation Army volunteers, employees and officers are already serving meals from mobile canteens or are awaiting deployment. There are also two 54-foot mobile kitchens that can provide 20,000 hot meals per day on standby.
Additionally, the Army has 125 special vehicles designated for disaster response throughout the Southeast that will distribute drinking water, shower units, first aid supplies, clean-up kits, containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies.
The organization said it is in need of volunteers and donations for hurricane relief efforts. They can contact 1-800-SALARMY or visit the website at www.salvationarmy.org for more information on how to help.
