HBO Watchmen Adaptation News: Damon Lindelof Teases Pre-Production

"The Leftovers" writer Damon Lindelof has a new project coming along and it appears he is very excited about it. He recently teased the pre-production of HBO's upcoming adaptation of "Watchmen."

It was confirmed back in June that t the "Lost" co-creator was in discussions to adapt the popular 1980's DC graphic novel "Watchmen." The comic already received a film adaptation which garnered mixed to positive reviews from critics particularly for its graphic violence.

Now it seems that the talks were successful as Lindelof recently shared a photo on Instagram from what appears to be the writers' room. The post didn't reveal much about the project although photo also showed a Nite Owl statue sitting with the caption, "Day One" which is probably enough for fans to get the message.

HBO president Casey Bloys already stated that the network's take on the "Watchmen" series will not be a straight adaptation of the graphic novel. The main reason for this is the overall length of the novel with Bloys adding that new material will likely be made for the series. "He's really thinking about this in amazing ways," Bloys said regarding Lindelof's thoughts on the direction of the upcoming series.

With the series, Lindelof is taking on a very different superhero story compared to what Hollywood and TV are now offering with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons classic limited comic series are set in an alternate universe where the existence of superheroes altered the course of history.

After the buzz generated by Zack Snyder's 2009 adaptation, HBO looked to make an adaptation as far back as 2015 to no avail, however. Now it seems that they finally get to do an adaptation although the fact that it will be different from either Snyder's or the original source might still leave fans divided on it.
