'How I Met Your Mother' Series Finale Recap: 2 Marriages, A Divorce and Rekindled Love (SPOILERS)
The "How I Met Your Mother" series finale finally revealed the fates of Ted, his wife Tracy, Robin and the rest of the cast- careful, spoilers ahead. Many long and winding plot lines finally came to an end, and many fans of the show realized just how much the ending had been foreshadowed, despite a bit of misdirection.
"How I Met Your Mother" began with Ted Mosby's (Josh Radnor) quest to find the woman he'd spend his days with, and it began and ended with Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders). It was revealed that Ted's wife and the mother of his children, Tracy McConnell (Cristin Milioti), died of an illness. But the story of "HIMYM" wasn't completely about Tracy- she was a red herring all along.
As for the group, things became somewhat fractured for them during the hour-long series finale before Ted and Robin's relationship restarted: Robin, who couldn't cope with Ted, Tracy and their two kids, Marshall and Lily's third pregnancy, and Barney's old womanizing ways, disappeared for a while. During that time she missed "big moments" with "the gang."
"Here's what the gang is: the gang is a married couple who I never see anymore about to have a third kid, it's my ex-husband hitting on slutty cops right in front of me and it's the guy I probably should have ended up with with the beautiful mother of his child. Who in their right mind would call that group of people 'the gang?'" Robin told Lily at their Halloween and farewell party.
Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), who swore he would never fall in love instantly with a woman, fell in love instantly with his baby daughter Ellie when he first laid eyes on her in 2020.
"You are the love of my life. Everything I have and everything I am is yours. Forever," Barney said.
When Ted finally finished his story to his children, it left them and the viewers unsatisfied.
"And that, kids, is how I met your mother," Mosby told his kids Penny and Luke. However, they were unsatisfied by the end of the convoluted tale and told him so- it seemed more like his story was about Aunt Robin than their mother Tracy.
"HIMYM" then went full circle- since Robin and Barney had mutually decided to divorce three years into their marriage, now-gray-haired Ted goes back to her window with the blue French horn he first used to woo her.
