'Injustice 2' Roster News: Magic-Wielding Doctor Fate From DC Comics Confirmed
NetherRealm Studios' action fighting game "Injustice 2" has added a new character in its extensive roster - this time, it's Doctor Fate, a DC Comics-based character
A brand new "Fate Trailer" is revealed alongside the character announcement to show off how Doctor Fate can take on Superman, telling him "Justice is blind, not heartless."
Despite being somewhat obscure, Doctor Fate first appeared in May 1940 and had several successors in the DC Universe. The character was created by Gardner Fox and drawn by artist Howard Sherman.
Doctor Fate was particularly chosen because NetherRealms aims to bring in new characters that can showcase different abilities and skill-sets.
Injustice 2 game designer John Edwards revealed that Doctor Fate was picked because his character is based on magic with spellcasting capabilities, unlike most superhero characters who rely on superhuman strength.
"Doctor Fate, being essentially the most powerful magic user in the DC universe, seemed like just a real good fit," Edwards added, according to GameSpot.
In the game, Doctor Fate's magical abilities comes with a drawback - he is not very good in close-combat and physical attacks unlike well-known characters such as Batman.
Edwards, however, added that Doctor Fate is rather good at keeping opponents at a distance, and that he can very well use traps that can help heal himself and create damage towards his opponents.
"It really allows him to keep the pace of the fights how he wants to. That's probably one of the coolest specials we have in the game," Edwards explained.
As to how the character will affect the game's storyline, it still remains to be seen. But judging from the trailer, it seems that Doctor Fate is very much against the fascist ways of Superman.
Doctor Fate joins newly confirmed playable characters for "Injustice 2" which include Black Canary, Dead Shot, Gorilla Grodd, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Supergirl among others.
"Injustice 2" is slated for a May 16 release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
