iPhone 6, iPhone 5S Release Could Lead to the iPhone 5 Being Discontinued

The release of the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 could lead to the current iPhone model being discontinued.

Once Apple launches its new low-cost plastic model and next-gen version, the company will no longer produce the iPhone 5, according to a new report from ETNews.com.

Apple is already expected to discontinue the lower-end models such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S in order to make way for the cheaper lightning-based replacement that will allow the company to standardize its current 30-pin connector. However, the end of the iPhone 5 was something that was not expected since it introduced the new wire connection in 2012.

The report also claims that the main reason why Apple will discontinue its latest model is due to it not being suitable for low volume production. This will allow Apple to focus all of its efforts toward producing parts for newer products. The iPhone 5S is expected to begin production later on this month.

Other rumors have pointed to the release of the new iPhones being pushed back.

Apple decided to enlarge the screen on the device to 4.3-inches, according to a new Bloomberg report, and this has caused production delays. The next-generation Apple smartphone, which could be either the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6, will now debut at the end of the year instead of the originally expected fall launch date.

Bloomberg highlighted a report from Taiwan's Commercial Times, who first stated that Apple could be pushing back the smartphone's release after hearing from unidentified sources in the semiconductor industry.

MacRumors weighed in on the new report.

"The claim is highly unlikely to be true, as Apple undoubtedly finalized the design of the iPhone 5S months ago and the company will reportedly begin mass production later this month," wrote the site. "Regardless, the fact that the report was picked up by Bloomberg is giving it wide visibility."
