'Iron Man 4' Update: Release Date Still Uncertain; Robert Downey Jr. To Be Replaced?

It's been two years since the last "Iron Man" standalone movie. Several fans are now wondering when the fourth installment will be coming to the big screen. Apparently, that is a question that still has an uncertain answer. According to Cinema Blend, "Iron Man 4" may not be coming around anytime soon.

There have been reports indicating that Marvel has not made any plans yet for the fourth sequel. They may not even be working on it until at least after year 2020, which is evidently a very long wait and could lead to the possibility of Robert Downey Jr. no longer reprising the role as the billionaire industrialist and genius inventor, Tony Stark.

Downey's last solo film playing as Iron Man was 2013's "Iron Man 3" which garnered a gross of more than $1 billion for Marvel at the box office. He will be seen in the upcoming Marvel movies "Captain America: Civil War" and "Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2." But how long can Downey hold on to the role? The actor has played as Tony Stark aka Iron Man for nearly eight years already.

Reports say that Downey's contract with Marvel is about to end soon. Aside from that, he will be 54 years old by the time the movie will start filming assuming it will be in 2020. There's really the possibility of recasting.

According to Screen Rant, Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige is aware of the matter.

He admitted that he may recast the role, which would actually also help Marvel save some cash as it would be cheaper to recast a new actor considering Downey was deemed the highest-paid actor in 2015. Lawyer Herald noted that Downey received a total of $40 million for his role in "Captain America: Civil War."

For the fans, replacing Downey will be disheartening. But as everyone knows, an actor cannot hold on to one role forever. Fans will just have to watch out for more updates on what Marvel plans to do with "Iron Man 4."
