Jennifer Hudson Debuts New Look; Sports 'Jesus Rocks My Soul' Shirt at NBC Studios
Singer Jennifer Hudson recently displayed her faith in a bold way, by wearing a t-shirt with the phrase "Jesus Rocks My Soul" during a trip to New York City.
Hudson, 33, was seen wearing the shirt while exiting NBC studios in NYC after filming a segment for "Access Hollywood Live." The singer-actress just released her newest album, "JHud." The new name is meant to reflect her changing sound and image, but even with the change, Hudson remains firmly rooted in her Christian faith.
In July 2014, she spoke about her faith bringing her through the hardest time in her life, the murders of her mother, brother, and seven-year-old nephew. The three were shot in 2008 while she was on tour, causing a great deal of pain for the performer, and leading to three life sentences for the shooter.
"I have definitely seen the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows," Hudson told the Observer. "You don't know how strong you are until you are placed in that kind of moment. We always said, 'If He brings you to it, He will bring you through it.' There would be no point in faith if it wasn't tested. My mother always told me no matter how negative your life seems to be, you must always look for a positive. That is what I believe a woman of faith should do."
The singer shot to fame after appearing on "American Idol," but she failed to win her season. Even then, she continued to perform and found a different type of fame. She's released award-winning albums and appeared in several movies including "Dreamgirls," for which she won a best supporting actress Oscar.
She spoke about her new moniker and album, explaining that it comes from "feeling. And me as a person, more so than just as a musician, like through this album, I feel as though you get a sense of my energy and that's why we named it 'JHud.' Because you're getting to know the girl, not just the public persona of Jennifer Hudson. But I want you to know the person, too, you know?" she said.
