Lin-Manuel Miranda Releases 'Almost Like Praying' In Support of Puerto Rico
Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda has just released a new song in support of the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
Hurricane Maria is considered to be the strongest storm to ever hit Puerto Rico in a century. With the devastation caused by the hurricane, it may take quite a while for Puerto Rico to be able to recover, but luckily, lots of people are willing to help them rebuild.
One such person is Lin Manuel Miranda who originated the role of Alexander Hamilton in the acclaimed Broadway musical "Hamilton." Titled "Almost Like Praying," Miranda's new song features a star-studded cast which include the likes of Latin star Marc Anthony, Camilla Cabello, Pedro Capo, Rita Moreno, Ednita Nazario, Anthony Ramos, Fat Joe, "Despacito" singer Luis Fonsi, Joell Ortiz, Ruben Blades, Juan Luis Guerra, Dessa, PJ Sin Suela, Ana Villafane, Tommy Torres, Alex Lacamoire, Tommy Torres, John Leguizamo, Gina Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez.
About 3.4 million people in Puerto Rico were left without electricity and thousands of them had even become homeless following the onslaught of Hurricane Maria. Drinking water has also become a big issue let alone food and fuel. Miranda's song, "Almost Like Praying," aims to help gather funds in order to help these people rebuild their lives.
"I wrote this song the day after the hurricane hit Puerto Rico. And one, we realized this storm was the worst storm to hit the island in modern history, and its name was Maria. And that's the name of my favorite song from West Side Story. So I thought, how can I flip that negative connotation into something positive for Puerto Rico?" Miranda said about the new song in an interview with Billboard.
Even before this new song, celebrities have already come together to extend their hand in help. Jennifer Lopez and Daddy Yankee have already pledged $1 million each for the victims of the powerful hurricane, and Pitbull even lent his private plane to help move cancer patients.
