Lutheran World Relief is celebrating its 60th anniversary at the four-day Global Mission Event of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America next month.
Since 1945, Lutheran World Relief (LWR) has acted on behalf of U.S. Lutherans, the ELCA, and the LCMS to help people grow food, improve health, strengthen communities, end conflict, build livelihoods and recover from disasters. The Global Mission Event (GME), which will be held Aug. 25-28 in Baltimore, will include four days of worship, learning, and fellowship as well as workshops and activities designed for kids of all ages and for adults as well.
Lutheran World Relief has come a long way since its beginning in 1945, the Balitmore-based agency said in a recent statement regarding the four-day Global Mission Event (GME). From a small agency shipping material resources to war-torn Europe, we have evolved into a development and relief agency working in 50 countries around the world to combat poverty and help all God's children live lives of justice, dignity and peace.
At next months GME, attendees will learn more about LWRs work, both through interactive displays and conversations with LWR staff members. There will also be an LWR Fair Trade Fair featuring fairly traded handcrafts, chocolate and coffee.
Eight workshops featuring the work of Lutheran World Relief will be offered at the GME. The one-hour sessions, which will be led by experts from LWR's staff, include subjects such as LWR's history, the LWR Coffee Project, LWRs commitment to the forgotten emergencies, the plight of displaced communities in Colombia, the anatomy of a disaster response, and more.
In addition, Saturday morning's plenary session will be a tribute to the ELCA's partner ministries based in BaltimoreLutheran World Relief, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), Lutheran Association for Maritime Ministry, and Lutheran Services in America (LSA).
LWR and its colleagues from LIRS, LSA and the Delaware-Maryland Synod will also host tours of our headquarters building, the Lutheran Center at Christ Church.
Registration for the GME closes on Aug. 1. To register go to http://lwr-news.c.topica.com/maadLC0abiMYCboU8Pob/
