'Mean Girls' Sequel Not Happening, Says Tina Fey; Musical is On Track

Contrary to Lindsay Lohan's announcement, there will be no "Mean Girls" sequel. Tina Fey gave a recent interview decrying all claims that the cast would reunite for the project but said they may spend time together on the 10th anniversary.

"We're coming up next month on the 10-year anniversary of the original movie … I can't believe it either," Fey said on "Extra." "We're going to see if there's any way to get everyone together, but not a movie, sadly. We're all past high school age."

The movie was a hit and became a cult classic just 10 years ago. It also helped launch the careers of Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfriend and more. "Mean Girls" had an all-star cast and was the first movie written by Fey, who rounded up "Saturday Night Live" co-stars for the project, including Amy Poehler, Tim Meadows, and Ana Gasteyer.

"When I was backstage I saw Tina and she mentioned maybe doing some kind of reunion," Lohan told Jimmy Fallon in March. "She said she was talking to Lorne [Michaels] about it, so she's talking to the big boss."

Her words sparked a frenzy of excitement among fans eager to see the continuation of the story and where the characters may be now. However, like Fey said, the characters are no longer in high school, which was a very important setting for the film.

Fans, of course, are disappointed that the reunion is not actually happening, given that they were extremely excited about Lohan's announcement.

"That Mean Girls reunion Lindsay Lohan's been talking about won't be a new film – boo!" tweeted Celebrity News.

But fans may be comforted by the fact that the "Mean Girls" musical is coming to stage in a few years. Fey is already working on that project and hopes to reunite the film cast for a special evening at the show.

"We're working on the musical, that's going to be in a couple years, I guess," Fey told E! News. "So hopefully there will be like a screening or a party, but that's it. But that would be good, right? I hope everyone can come. I hope we can organize something."
