Microsoft Lumia 640 Specs, Release Date: Latest Handset Among First In Line to Receive Windows 10 Update

For Microsoft, the new Windows 10 will be their final move to make their Lumia handsets relevant in the market.

For more than three years, the Redmond giant has worked with Nokia and other brands just to keep its mobile platform afloat. However, until now Windows Phone 8.1 has not been able to reach market goals, and as a result, the acquisition of Nokia's mobile division may not be beneficial for Microsoft after all.

And so in another attempt to promote its latest devices, Microsoft has just announced that the Lumia 640 will be among the first devices to get the Windows 10 update.

According to the report by GSM Arena, the confirmation was made by Microsoft's Scandinavian General Manager Ossi Korpela, referring to the Lumia 640 as a "high-end affordable device."

Earlier this year, Microsoft unveiled the Lumia 640 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. A month later, the handset has been made available in India, one of the company's target markets.

The Windows Phone 8.1 powered handset boasts a 5-inch display with HD (1280 x 720) resolution, quad-core Snapdragon 400 chipset, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of built-in memory. Other specs include an 8MP primary camera, 1MP front shooter, a microSD card slot, and 2,500mAh battery.

The UK already has the Lumia 640, together with its bigger sibling, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL.

In the report, the Lumia handset has reportedly appeared briefly on Microsoft's online store in the U.S., indicating an impending release.
