'Minecraft' Update: New Marketplace for Creators to Launch This Spring
Microsoft and Mojang's popular open world sandbox building video game "Minecraft" will be adding a Marketplace for player-made content sometime this spring. An update will also be made available for the game's mobile and Windows 10 PC editions.
According to GameRant, the "Minecraft" Marketplace will grant approved creators the ability to sell add-ons such as maps and texture packs to other players. These creators will receive a portion of the profits of what they create. However, as of this writing, the wage percentage has yet to be revealed.
Among the partner creators at the launch of the new "Minecraft" Marketplace are Blockworks — which is a group that makes role-playing game-style maps — and Eneija Silverleaf, a popular pixel artist that makes skins for the video game.
Mojang is also accepting new submissions through the "Minecraft" Partner Program. According to the studio, it hopes that the new Marketplace will make it so much easier for the game's most avid community members to be rewarded for their efforts.
"The idea is to give Minecraft creators another way to make a living from the game," Mojang said. "Allowing them to support themselves in the creation of ever-greater projects, while giving Pocket and Windows 10 players access to a growing catalogue of fun stuff — curated and supplied by us, safely and simply."
Gamers playing on mobile and PC versions will be able to acquire the add-on content from creators using Minecraft Coins. This works similarly to the currencies used in other mobile games, but in order to buy on the Marketplace, a gamer must have either an Xbox Live Silver or Gold account.
Aside from the new Marketplace, Mojang has also recently announced that "Minecraft" will be receiving the Discovery Update, which will bring in new elements such as treasure maps and the ability to change bed color, among others. The upcoming update is also expected to introduce new enchantments.
"Minecraft" is currently available on PC, consoles and a variety of smart devices.
