Natural Ways to Manage Allergies

God's plant kingdom contains herbs and natural substances that are very effective in combating or preventing allergy symptoms without the unwanted side effects associated with medication.

An estimated 50 million people in the United States, approximately 20 percent of the population, suffer from allergies – a figure that has doubled in the last decade. But it isn't always possible to prevent allergy attacks, and allergy sufferers need to have a way to manage the inevitable symptoms.

Traditional medicine has typically treated allergic symptoms with antihistamines, such as Benadryl; decongestants, such as Sudafed; and Claritin, all of which can have side effects ranging from drowsiness to elevated blood pressure and overstimulation.

But, there are natural antihistamines found in nature that you can take to help deal with allergies. It is only within the past few years that study results have been released on the natural treatments for the symptoms associated with allergic reactions.

• Quercetin tops the list of natural antihistamines. It is an important member of a large group of plant compounds called flavonoids. Flavonoids have potent antioxidant properties, with the same essential benefits of Claritin, Benadryl, and Sudafed, but without the side effects.

God has spread quercetin widely throughout the plant kingdom - it is abundant in fruits and vegetables, particularly apples and onions, and in smaller amounts in purple grape juice and some leafy greens. However, you would need to eat a whole bushel of apples to get the concentrated benefit found in a supplement! Studies show it inhibits the release of histamines, acting as a mild antihistamine to stop the runny nose and watery eyes that occur with allergic and hay fever symptoms. • Quercitin is very effective when combined with another natural plant extract, Tinospora, which comes from the stem of a plant native to India. A study conducted on tinospora reported that 61-83% of the patients reported 100% improvement in their symptoms of nasal discharge, obstruction, and itching.

• Nettle leaf has long been used in healing, and a recent study indicated that nettle can alleviate the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and hayfever.

• Perilla seed extract has also been shown to inhibit the inflammatory response and reduce the allergic response in studies.

• A chemical found in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, inhibits IgE receptor release. By inhibiting this receptor, which is part of the immune system, allergy symptoms can be relieved. Green tea is also of benefit to asthmatics because activation of this same receptor can trigger an asthmatic attack.

• Polyphenols, found in grapes, have been shown to be potent histamine inhibitors and bronchial tree dilators.

• Vitamin C has an antihistamine effect that has been shown to decrease bronchitis when taken in combination with quercitin, tinospora, and polyphenols. In addition to well-known citrus fruit, there are some extremely concentrated forms of vitamin C that aren't commonly available in our diet. Acerola cherry has up to 25 times more vitamin C than oranges, and camu-camu, from a shrub found in the Amazon, contains more vitamin C than any other plant in the world.
