'New Girl' Season 7 News: Still No Renewal Confirmation From FOX; Season 6 Offers Stand-Alone Finale Episode
FOX sitcom "New Girl," which stars Zooey Deschanel as a nerdy, adorable girl who moved into an apartment with three guys, has not yet been renewed by the network. It is now believed that the final episode of its sixth season could also be its last.
Cast member Jake Johnson, who plays Nick Miller and one of Jess's (Deschanel) roommates, said that it is unlikely that FOX will still renew the series and mentions that the last episode of season 6, which will air on April 4, has already been shot as a sort of finale.
"Fox won't tell us [whether the show will be renewed]," Johnson says during an interview with The Daily Beast, "But we shot a finale where, if this was the end, the core fan base would be OK," he adds.
However, in a subsequent tweet, the actor clarified that there is still a "50/50" chance for the show to be renewed, and that he was only expressing his guess and not the network's actual decision.
"New Girl" had a good start for its first couple of seasons, launching Deschanel as the poster child of being an "adorkable" woman who was both nerdy and gorgeous at the same time.
In recent episodes, however, the show was struggling with a mere 0.9 million viewers from the 18 to 49-year-old demographic for its Feb. 28 episode.
As of the moment, FOX did not announce any renewal or cancellation for its other shows yet, so it may be safe to say that "New Girl" might still come back for a seventh season.
And even if it does not, fans can be assured that the show will end on a good note as its last episode is already written as a sort of stand-alone closure for the series.
Currently in season 6, "New Girl" airs new episodes every Tuesday, 8 p.m. EDT on FOX.
