Nina Dobrev News: Ian Somerhalder Says Departure of Elena From 'Vampire Diaries' Let Show Get Back Its Focus
Ian Somerhalder recently opened up about working on "The Vampire Diaries" after Nina Dobrev left, and he said they were finally able to focus on the main plot.
After Nina Dobrev decided to leave "The Vampire Diaries," everyone was left wondering how the show would run without her character Elena Gilbert. However, things eventually worked out well, as evidenced by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley's recent revelations, according to Movie News Guide (MNG).
While everyone initially thought that the series will undergo a huge turnaround after Dobrev's departure, Somerhalder said "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 has become the best so far. He said they were finally able to highlight the real focus of the story, Variety reports.
"We're really able to really focus on what this show was always about, which is this relationship with these two boys…" Somerhalder said. "They're like the main love story; that fraternal kinship is more powerful and in effect this year more than ever."
Talking about the Civil War episode of the series, Somerhalder shared how well everything was executed — from script, to props, and acting. In just five days, he said he lost a total of six pounds, the report relays.
Meanwhile, Somerhalder revealed that he loves working with female directors because he thinks they are "deeper" compared to men. He appreciates how their emotional perspective translates into their work.
Wesley, on the other hand, told Collider in an interview that Dobrev's exit only served to return the focus of the show on the friendship of Damon and his character Stefan. He also told TV Insider that Elena is still a big part of the series because Damon still has to protect her body until she wakes up.
"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 episode 7, which is titled "Mommie Dearest," aired Nov. 19, and the next episode will air on Dec. 3.
