'Once Upon a Time' season 5 news, cast, spoilers: How Merida falls into the storyline
Recent news is that "Once Upon a Time" will be introducing its first-ever Pixar character into the storyline, Merida, from the animated movie "Brave." EW recently featured as to what can be expected from the red-haired character's entrance.
According to executive producer Edward Kitsis, Merida will be very much like her character in the original movie. He describes her as "a spitfire like [she was in] the movie." He further adds, "If she's not your favorite new character this year, I won't know what to say. She's a lot of fun." The decision to add her character is a result of Kitsis and co-producer Adam Horowitz's love for Merida's character since she came out on the big screen.
Horowitz finally drops some details on how Merida will be introduced in the timeline. He explains that Merida's entrance into the world of OUAT will be set after the movie's events. He further shares, "We're going to give you a little taste of where she's been since then, what's happened to her since the end of that movie, and then we're going to see that that somehow crosses with our people and with our Once Upon a Time mythology."

Merida's courage and bravery come into a big play once she finally meets one of the main characters of the film, Emma, who will be going dark this season. It is most likely that the encounter will happen when they go to the land of Camelot in search of Merlin, who can help Emma. Furthermore, many are excited to be see Belle and Merida go off on an adventure, considering that Belle has had not many opportunities to do so.
After the news came to light, a fan theory circulated about how Merida is somehow Zelena and Robin Hood's unborn child, as time travel became quite possible in their world. However, producers were quick to debunk this theory by stating, "It's just a fun theory, but the reality is we are sticking to the canon of the movie Brave in terms of who her parents are and where she came from, but post-movie is where our Once Upon a Time spin comes into play."
Season 5 of Once Upon a Time premieres on Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
