'Penny Dreadful' season 3 news, cast, spoilers: An iconic character set to join the series and the return of Patti LuPone

For many viewers of "Penny Dreadful," they consider the series to be one of the best shows in television today. However, one flaw of the show that fans can agree on would be the fact that there aren't enough episodes to connect each story line or fill in the gaps.

Now for season 3, a new character will be introduced that would definitely keep viewers more hooked than ever. According to Blastr, Showtime announced the addition of Dr. Henry Jekyll from the famous classic novel "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

The horror novel was published in 1886 and has since then been adapted into numerous movies and shows. Dr. Henry Jekyll is the protagonist in this novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is also the most infamous fictional case of the rare mental condition "split personality," or what is properly called dissociative identity disorder. The story tells how Dr. Jekyll deals with his other personality, Mr. Hyde, who is completely evil, a total opposite of his original self.

The actor cast to play the part is Shazad Latif. Latif is a London-born actor, with a mix of Pakistani, English, and Scottish descent. He has appeared before in the BBC TV Series "Spooks" and in the movie "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." His appearance in Penny Dreadful would be one of his most notable roles to date.

Another anticipated cast would be the return of Patti LuPone in the next season. Last season, LuPone played the Cut-Wife, in which Eva Green's character, Vanessa Ives, sought sanctuary from for a short time. According to Variety, this time, LuPone is set for a recurring new role as Dr. Seward, an American therapist intent on treating Vanessa with an unconventional new approach.

Season 3 of Penny Dreadful is set to air in 2016.
