'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' News: Game Breaks All-Time High Record of Concurrent Players

"PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds," also referred to as "PUBG," recently broke one of Steam's all-time records for having the highest number of concurrent players.

Over the weekend, "PUBG" claimed the top spot on the list of games with the biggest number of concurrent players in all of Steam. Just a week earlier, "PUBG" passed the 1 million-mark.

According to SteamCharts.com, the multiplayer online battle royal video game reached a peak of 1,348,374 concurrent players last week as it overtook Valve's "Dota 2" that had 1,291,328 online players on March 2016.

"PUBG's" breakthrough was especially interesting considering that the game is still in its early access phase on Steam and an official release of its final version is still without a date.

The game has now dominated several other titles that have been mainstays in Steam's records for games with high peak counts.

As "PUBG" takes the first spot, while the second belongs to "Dota 2," another Valve-developed title "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" is in third place with 850,485 concurrent players in April 2016.

In fourth place is Bethesda Softworks' "Fallout 4" (471,955; November 2015), with Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto V's" coming in fifth (360,761; April 2015).

Other games that made it into the list are (6th to 10th place) "PAYDAY 2," "No Man's Sky," "Sid Meier's Civilization VI," "Left 4 Dead 2," and "Terraria."

"PUBG," for the most part, was conceived by Bluehole's Brendan Greene, also known as PlayerUnknown, based on his previously crafted mods which were inspired by the 2000-released movie "Battle Royale."

Its gameplay mechanics is pretty much summed up in the title, up to 100 players can join in on a gaming session set on an island where they will have to find weapons and other equipment to help them survive and move on to the next match.

Despite the game's already massive success – with 10 million copies sold on Steam's Early Access platform – Greene previously stated that he was not planning to increase "PUBG's" price once it comes out for its final release, according to GameSpot.

Aside from its PC version, "PUBG" will also be released on the Xbox One.
