Prince Harry Gets a Promotion in British Army Ahead of Meghan Markle Wedding
It looks like 2018 is going to be a good and memorable year for Prince Harry. Ahead of his May wedding to fiancée Meghan Markle, the prince also got a promotion in his royal duties.
Queen Elizabeth recently appointed Prince Harry as the Captain General Royal Marines. The 33-year-old royal will take over this role for his grandfather Prince Philip, who held the position since 1953 when his wife became the Queen.
Prince Harry's new gubernatorial role will find him flying overseas to various bases where there are Royal servicemen. The promotion fits Prince Harry perfectly since he also served the Armed Forces like his grandfather.
The prince started military service as a second lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, Blues and Royals in 2005. The prince was also in the Royal Army for 10 years and joined service tours in Afghanistan. Prince Harry flew with the Army Air Cops as an Apache pilot before his retirement from active service.
Buckingham Palace announced in May that Prince Philip was officially retiring from his royal duties at the age of 96. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was in the Royal Navy before marrying the Queen, will no longer accept invitations for public visits and engagements.
Just a few days before his promotion, Kensington Palace confirmed Prince Harry's actual wedding date to Markle. The big day will happen on May 19, 2018.
The couple announced their engagement in November after 18 months of dating. According to reports, one of the reasons Prince Harry wanted to marry earlier than expected by royal standards was so that his grandfather can still enjoy the ceremony and the wedding party.
Prince Harry and Markle chose St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle for their wedding day. The palace has no official word if it's a televised event, like Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011.
