Rihanna Reacts to Princess Diana Comparison
Rihanna, the 24-year-old Barbadian pop star, recently revealed her thoughts about being compared to the late Princess Diana who was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales.
Princess Diana was named in recent headlines 16 years after her death when British publication The Sunday Times Magazine featured her on their cover. Alongside the late princess was a graphically enhanced half of Rihanna's face meshed together.
In the Times Magazine cover story titled "The Princess & The Showgirl" Rihanna and the late princess of Wales are compared to one another for their "ravishingly seductive flirtation with the world press."
Camille Paglia, the author of the Times Magazine cover story, said the women utilized the press in similar ways.
"Like Diana, Rihanna has worryingly drifted into using photo ops to send messages of allure, defiance or revenge in a turbulent relationship with an errant partner," Paglia wrote.
However, some people questioned the author's assessment of the two women.
"This 'Rihanna is the new Princess Diana' thing is so incredibly insulting, I don't even know where to begin," one person tweeted.
Another social media user agreed with the sentiments.
"If you genuinely think there are similarities between Rihanna and Princess Diana please notify me so I can proceed to report you as spam," the person tweeted.
However, other people came to the singer's defense.
"Soak it all up," another person tweeted. "You deserve it."
Rihanna caught wind of the Sunday Times Magazine cover story and took to her Instagram account to reveal her thoughts on the matter.
"Just so happens I came home drunk to this in a pile of papers outside my hotel room," Rihanna wrote. "My lil Bajan behind, never thought these many people would even know my name, now it's next to Princess Diana's on the front of a newspaper! Life can be such a beautiful thing when you let it be #yourejealous :)"
The singer also shared an image of the magazine cover with her face fused against Princess Diana's along with the caption, "when your face is pic-stitched to Princess Diana's on the cover of The Sunday Times.... I mean... #extraordinaRIHbehavior."
