Samsung Galaxy S7 News: Next Iteration Out On February 21

Samsung is set to debut its latest Galaxy flagship device at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 21, CNET has learned.

According to the website, Samsung has given out invitations to an "Unpacked" event, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. CET, on the eve of the annual Mobile World Congress, the year's biggest mobile trade show. Although Samsung did not explicitly say that it will launch the Galaxy S7, the seventh generation of its flagship Galaxy smartphone, CNET, The Verge, and other tech websites expect that it is the S7 that will be "unpacked" at the event.

On the same day, LG will debut its LG G5, one of two flagship devices on which the South Korean tech giant has pinned its hopes of reviving its sinking mobile devision.

Similarly, Samsung has a lot riding on the success of its latest signature smartphone, as the Galaxy S6 wasn't able to keep the company from losing market share to other smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and Motorola in 2015. And though the Samsung Galaxy S6 received mostly positive reviews and featured an upgraded build (from plastic to metal), it didn't help the South Korean tech conglomerate advance over Apple and its iPhones, which continued to sell well throughout the previous year.

There's not a lot known about the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and most of its purported features are pure hearsay. Nevertheless, tech experts expect the S7 to come in two variants: one straight-edged and one curved. It is said to come equipped with a screen larger than that of the Galaxy S6, be cheaper than the Galaxy S6, bring back the micro-SD card slot of older Galaxy S phones, and be waterproof or water-resistant like the S5. There has also been talk about the S7 being equipped with retina-scanning technology and a 3D Touch feature similar to that of the iPhone.
