Samsung Galaxy X Release Date, Specs Rumors: Tech Giant Files Trademark for Foldable Smartphone's Name

Samsung's foldable smartphone, reportedly called the Galaxy X, has constantly been in the news for the past several months despite the lack of official confirmation from the South Korean tech giant. Nevertheless, the latest reports suggest that the highly anticipated device could be arriving soon.

According to SamMobile, Samsung recently submitted an application to trademark the name "Galaxy X" in its home country of South Korea. While no specific details were mentioned in the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) listing, the trademark certification seems to hint that the tech giant is making significant progress in the foldable smartphone's development.

Previous reports from various publications noted that the Samsung Galaxy X isn't expected to arrive until later this year or even in early 2018. However, South Korean publication ETNews recently reported that latest version of the foldable smartphone was already presented to some attendees at the Mobile World Congress — behind closed doors. Thus, this could mean that the Galaxy X is already ready for public consumption.

Furthermore, it has been mentioned that Samsung might initially roll out a limited number of Galaxy X prototypes to see how consumers will react to the device and to forecast demand for the highly anticipated foldable smartphone. The full-scale release of the Galaxy X could then depend on how the initial 100,000 units will be received by the market.

In terms of technical specifications, the Samsung Galaxy X is rumored to be a 5-inch smartphone that can be transformed into a 7-inch tablet. However, earlier patents also suggested that the Galaxy X could have a clamshell form factor that can be opened to reveal an expansive display. Several concepts for the Galaxy X could suggest that Samsung is mulling over creating different variants for the foldable smartphone range.

However, Samsung has not officially commented on the latest reports so information regarding the Galaxy X should be taken with a grain of salt.
