Samsung Re-imagines The Flip Phone With The Samsung W2016
Originally dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Golden 3, Samsung's latest flip phone is now officially called the Samsung W2016, according to a report in Tech Times. Unlike older-generation flip phones however, the W2016 sports so many more features such as a dual-screen and faster processing power.
According to the report, Samsung intends to bring back the flip phone which was once popular. Notably, there are still some Asian markets such as China and South Korea where flip phones are still in demand. Thus, companies like Samsung and competitor LG want to bring back these phones to these markets.
The Samsung W2016, however, is very different from older generation flip phones. Previous flip phones were usually made of cheap, lightweight material, but the W2016 comes with a sleek-looking metal design. It also runs on Android OS and has not just one, but two AMOLED touchscreens which are measured to be 3.9 inches. These screens have a WXGA 1,280 x 768 pixel resolution. Since it is a flip phone, it retains the physical T9 keyboard.
Official specs of the new device appeared on Samsung's China website, according to the report. The listing also indicated a Buy button which, according to the report, was not yet available, leading to an error message when clicked.
While the China listing did not reveal any of the phone's specs, another report in Phone Arena said that the phone will come with an octa-core Exynos 7420 processor running at 2.1 GHz. This processor comes with 3 GB of RAM. Internal storage is at 64 GB, with no indication if it is expandable or not. The device comes with a 16 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel selfie shooter. Battery capacity is at 2,000 mAh, which the report says is enough to provide long-lasting power. It will be equipped with wireless charging.
The Tech Times report said that the device will have dual-SIM support and will also have several connectivity options: 4G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, GLONASS and microUSB.
There is no indication yet when the phone will be available, how much it will cost and which markets it will be released.
