San Francisco 49ers Roster News 2015: Colin Kaepernick Put on IR, Career in Team Cast in Doubt

Colin Kaepernick told the team's medical staff that there is some soreness in his non-throwing shoulder on Monday, forcing team officials to have it looked and treated the rest of the week. On Saturday, though, the 49ers eventually placed him on the season-ending IR because of the same left shoulder injury, officially ruling him out for the remaining games of the season.

The question now is if the quarterback has finally seen his time in San Francisco end after only three years since taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

Although Blaine Gabbert started in Sunday's loss against the Seahawks, Kaepernick was actually listed as "probable" in that game, with the team hoping to have him play as backup in case he was needed. But the 28-year-old came into the team facility and told the staff that his shoulder wasn't healing and that he needed to ask about his other options.

Reports started coming in saying that Kaepernick may have been suffering from a torn labrum in his non-throwing hand. This type of injury usually requires surgery, which means that although there hasn't been any official word yet, it is likely that the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl most valuable player will decide in the coming days.

According to Kaepernick, he suffered the injury in Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers when he saw himself sacked six times.

To serve as backup to Gabbert is the unheralded quarterback Dylan Thompson, an undrafted rookie out of South Caroline who will officially become part of the team's practice squad and will obtain Kaepernick's roster spot.

Kaepernick's time with the 49ers isn't a complete failure, though. As a second round pick back in 2011, he made quite an impression during the 2012 season where he took over Alex Smith's post after the latter suffered a concussion. He played well in San Francisco's Super Bowl XLVII defeat to the Ravens. He recently signed a $126 million extension and is expected to earn about $14 million next year.

However, whether he'll be staying in San Francisco or not is still a big question mark after the injury.
