'Sherlock' Christmas Special News: New Trailer Reveals Title and Release Date

Fans of BBC's "Sherlock" television series will have something to tide them over this holiday season while waiting for the return of the new season of the hit TV series. A new trailer has been released for the show's upcoming Christmas special revealing that "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" will be airing simultaneously on January 1, 2016 in the U.K. and the U.S. BBC One also made the announcement through Twitter.

The trailer which was released on the PBS Masterpiece channel on YouTube showed Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson wearing Victorian clothing and working a case in Victorian London. While the trailer was vague on the special's plot, it showed several dead bodies, a mysterious gathering of hooded men, and Holmes wearing his signature deerstalker. Watson is also donning a mustache.

According to a report in BBC News, fans in the U.K. will also get a special treat as the special will also be shown in over 100 cinemas in the U.K. aside from the TV broadcast. This gives viewers more choices in watching their favorite sleuth in action. Extra material will be shown during the cinema screen such as behind-the-scenes footage and a tour of the set for 221B Baker by one of the show's creators, Steven Moffat. Tickets will be available starting November 2, according to the report.

The report also cited that the special will be broadcast in the U.S. through PBS' Masterpiece Mystery on the same day of the first airing in the U.K., which is good news for American fans who have previously complained about delayed airing of the series in the U.S.

In related news, BBC One also tweeted that the show's creators Moffat and Mark Gatiss have started working on the scripts for the next season, which will start production in the spring of 2016.

"Sherlock" stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the enigmatic detective and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. Joining them for the special are Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves and Una Stubbs.
