'Sleepy Hollow' Season 3 News, Spoilers: Network, Showrunner Address Major Character Death

"Sleepy Hollow" ended its third season with the devastating death of one of its main characters.

In its season 3 finale, the supernatural drama series killed off Special Agent Abbie Mills, played by series star Nicole Beharie, a bold move that shocked and angered many fans.

The move echoed what many other shows have recently done in a bid to make headlines and improve viewership. Various series regulars and guest stars have been killed off in recent weeks, including Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) of "Arrow," Camilla (Naomi Campbell) and Mimi (Marisa Tomei) of "Empire," Yidu (Dianne Doan) of "Vikings," and the unnamed victim in the much-hyped season 6 finale of "The Walking Dead."

In Friday's season 3 finale, Abbie sacrificed herself to stop the Hidden One (Peter Mensah), who was intent on destroying the world. After a devastating farewell from the realm between life and death, Abbie left her partner, Crane (Tom Mison), behind to continue fighting the bad guys.

"Sleepy Hollow" showrunner Clifton Campbell and 20th Century Fox Television released a joint statement about the controversial season finale, which read in part (via The Hollywood Reporter): "We feel we provided a wonderfully poignant conclusion for Abbie and showed some of the best moments between the Witnesses that we've seen on-screen."

"We thank Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie and 'Sleepy Hollow' to life," the statement read. "We are currently discussing season 4, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore."

Beharie also spoke about her exit in a Twitter post in which she took the opportunity to thank her "Sleepy Hollow" co-stars and the show's crew.

"I'm rooting for my co-stars and crew… they have been my inspiration, my teachers, family, my friends, over the last few seasons," the actress wrote.

"I will never be the same," she added.

No official announcement has been made about the fourth season of "Sleepy Hollow."
