'Sons of Anarchy' spin-off news, cast, characters: Developing series not exactly a spin-off, not at all a prequel

"Sons of Anarchy" (SOA) was a series that many people felt sad to see end. The lasting impression of the show had its fans asking whether a spin-off is in the works, and it seems their prayers have been answered as Kurt Sutter, creator of the hit series, has made news recently about developing a spin-off.

The new show will apparently focus on the Mayans. Whether it will get a full season or just a mini-series hasn't been confirmed. One thing for sure, though, is that none of the original characters in SOA will appear soon on this new show, so it technically does not make it a spin-off.

Sutter, in an interview with Deadline, explained how the idea of this follow-up show came about. "The Mayan thing happened as I was talking to Eric Schrier, one of the FX executives I've known since The Shield. We were talking about the idea of doing things for other markets, like the Spanish-speaking market. I casually said I'd be open to doing something with the Mayans."

He also adds that it would be in the same timeline, but in a different environment, "I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told. It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn't want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that. It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn't do anything to undermine."

With that said, Sutter is open to having the two shows meet at some point if everything goes as planned. Moreover, the creator is very much interested in developing an actual spin-off for SOA with a different idea, as he shares, "At some point I do have plans to hopefully do the prequel, which I do see as a one-off 10- or 12-episode thing where we begin in Nam and see John Teller and Piney and see how that relationship got created, and bring them back to the States and the obvious external dynamics that were going on with the country and the perception of the war and what an odd kind of perception these vets got when they returned home. And then have it be the development of the club, ending before we start to get too close to some of the mythology that's already been established."

However, Sutter is currently busy filming his new series "The Bastard Executioner," so it's quite unlikely that the envisioned prequel will happen anytime soon, leaving the Mayan-centered show more likely to take off before any actual prequel series.
