'Star Wars IX' News: What Should Fans Expect Following the Events in 'The Last Jedi'?
The past week marked the much-awaited premiere of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," and events in the movie inevitably provided clues on what to expect in the final installment of the trilogy.
Last Friday, "The Last Jedi" premiered in the United States and have already had screenings in many countries around the world. As expected, the movie answered many undiscussed arcs from the previous installments while also raising more questions and possibilities for the next ones, especially for the still-untitled finale of the trilogy.
One of the more obvious plots likely to become the focus of "Star Wars IX" involves the supposed death of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and what it means for Rey (Daisy Ridley).
In "The Last Jedi," Luke was pretty straightforward in telling Rey that in his passing, she would have the sole responsibility of securing the peace and justice in the universe.
Apart from trying to decipher what "The Last Jedi" means, a lot of fans were hoping to finally learn who Rey's parents were.
Before the release of the movie, this was one of the highly discussed and speculated plots, with many fans thinking that Rey's parents could be very important people in the galaxy. However, in the encounter between Rey and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), the latter fiercely claimed that her parents were not as important as she hoped and as fans thought.
Since "Star Wars" is known to have creative ways in revealing real family trees in the universe, reports are still doubting if what Kylo Ren said was entirely true. So, many are still expecting to learn more about this topic once "Star Wars IX" premieres.
Another very obvious arc to happen in "Star Wars IX" is Kylo Ren's rise to ultimate power. His top position in the First Order was sealed by the surprising death of Supreme Leader Snoke. Driven by his hope of erasing everything about his past and his real family, it would be interesting to watch how Kylo Ren would lead the group of bad guys and how effective a leader he would be in his attempt to completely quash the Resistance.
In a way, "Star Wars IX" seems like a transition of the franchise to a new breed of characters going into war, with Rey and Kylo Ren in the lead.
Though Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) was alive by the end of "The Last Jedi," producers have already confirmed that late actress Fisher would no longer be in the next film. And because Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) did not survive in the movie as well, this means Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is the most likely character to lead the Resistance in the next movie.
"Star Wars IX" is slated to premiere on Dec. 20, 2019.
