'Stranger Things' Season 3 Rumors: What to Expect From Upcoming Installment

The massive Mind Flayer may be back for more trouble when "Stranger Things" returns for season 3.

Season 2 of the sci-fi Netflix drama was a huge hit among fans, who have been anticipating the new batch of episodes since July 2016. Now that most viewers have already binge-watched "Stranger Things," many are wondering what lies ahead for the sleepy little town of Hawkins.

Mind Flayer's Return

Although Eleven aka Jane (Millie Bobby Brown) has successfully banished the Mind Flayer from Hawkins, season 2 wrapped up with the beast still alive in the Upside Down. He is now aware of Eleven's powers, which means he could strike back again.

A fan theory predicts the monster will perform another takeover attempt. This time, he might attempt to possess a much stronger host: Eleven. It's also possible that a different kind of Mind Flayer will be introduced in season 3, since there are various types of them in the Dungeons and Dragons lore.

Potential New Villains

Doctor Brenner aka "Papa" (Matthew Modine) briefly appeared in season 2. It was revealed by one of his colleagues that he is still alive, leading to speculations that he could come back to Eleven's life.

There is a possibility that more of Eleven's brothers and sisters will surface next season. Based on Eleven's and Kali's (Linnea Berthelsen) tattoos, there may be nine others with abilities like them.

Different Locations

Compared with the first installment that was exclusively set in Hawkins, season 2 proved that there is a bigger world than the small Indiana town. Since the Duffer Brothers are clearly interested in widening the show's scope, fans can expect season 3 to go beyond Hawkins' borders.

Fans may see Steve (Joe Keery) embark on a new journey in college, or Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) participating in campus tours. Also, Eleven will likely reunite with her sister Kali as they dig deeper into their shared past.

The third season of "Stranger Things" is expected to premiere 2018 on Netflix.
