Study Reveals That Blueberries Can Prevent Dementia
A recent study revealed that adding blueberries to the daily diet of middle aged men and women can prevent the development of dementia.
It was reported that experts spoke about the 'superfood' during a U.S. conference, where it was revealed that blueberries have the capability to strengthen the defenses of the brain. This will allow the brain to better fight diseases such as Alzheimers.
Robert Krikorian, a researcher from the University of Cincinnati, studied a group of 47 men and women, who were above the age of 68 and were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. The study followed the theory that lapses in memory could result into the development of dementia.
With that, the participants were given blueberry powder or placebo powder. They were instructed to take it once a day for four months. At the start of the study, they went through a series of mental tests that integrated memory skills associated with dementia. It was said that they also had to take the same tests at the end of their four month study.
Research revealed that most current medicine options for dementia do not rely on fruits. Therefore, the experts believe that the new breakthrough could shift emphasis on healthier lifestyles and diet. As reported by Eurekalert, Krikorian explained that the beneficial effects of blueberries could be rooted from flavonoids called anthocyanins. It was said that this has the potential to improve an animal's cognition.
He also stated, "Our new findings corroborate those of previous animal studies and preliminary human studies, adding further support to the notion that blueberries can have a real benefit in improving memory and cognitive function in some older adults."
Aside from the recent findings, research showed that blueberries also have ben ability to lower the risk of heart disease and cancer. It also provides Vitamin C as well as healthy fiber and manganese.
