'Superman vs Batman' release date, plot news: No appearance for Man of Steel in 'Suicide Squad' but maybe in the sequel

There's a steep competition in the entertainment industry nowadays when it comes to superhero live action movies and shows. While Marvel is certainly busy trying to build its cinematic universe (Avengers franchise, X-Men franchise), DC has been focusing on its television takeover ("Arrow," "The Flash," "Legends of Tomorrow"). It would only make sense now that both companies are focused on expanding to both sides, and DC is definitely doing that this year with the release of "Superman v Batman" and "Suicide Squad." Fans are now wondering if there's a chance for Superman to do an appearance in the latter to strengthen the DC connection.

According to Metro, actor Henry Cavill cleared the rumors in his recent interview. He answered with a firm "no," much to fans' disappointment. However, what gave back hope was Cavill's response to the following question of whether he will be in the sequel, as he said, "I might be!"

Perhaps one of the main reasons for the hesitation is the unsure reception for his Superman v Batman movie. Although the audience response to the trailers has generally been positive, the studio will have to wait for how the movie will do, if it earns enough for a franchise to go on, which will likely seal a multiple film deal for the British actor, as well.

Screenrant discusses why Superman's absence is not entirely surprising. In the Marvel cinematic universe, the Avengers don't always show up in other Marvel films. Connection is established, though, by inserting them into the script, which may also happen in Superman's case. Furthermore, in a movie where villains are the heroes, it would seem difficult to fit Superman anywhere even as a cameo. It seems highly unlikely that Superman would go eagerly on board in teaming up with the squad, at least for the first film.

However, for fans of the Man of Steel, Batman v Superman will open in theatres on March 25, 2016.
