How To Teach My Children About Prayer

A good legacy we can pass on to our children is a deep sense of reverence to God. It's never too early to teach kids about faith. In fact, it is the best time for parents to inculcate in them spiritual knowledge, while they are able to absorb information that can be handled by their impressionable young minds.

Learning about God does not only stimulate a child's mind, it also develops spirituality, which is the foundation of moral values. A sense of right and wrong is ingrained in the child's personality that will grow with him/her.

One of the foundations of faith that should be planted in a child is the habit of prayer. One must know early on the importance of conversing with the Almighty. One should know that God is not a being to be feared but rather someone whom we can constantly run to all the time.

Teach the child to be grateful for all the blessings he/she received. Tell him/her to ask for forgiveness regarding whatever wrong he/she committed no matter how small – whether it's telling a lie or making fun of playmates. Along with it, teach the concept of repentance.

While it's good that children should depend on God, they must also learn the value of working for something. Emphasize that God is not a genie who grants every wish that is prayed for and that it is best to rely on His higher wisdom which includes saying no to some requests.

Finally, teach a child to also pray for other people's plight. It will awaken concern and compassion towards others to the point that sharing will come naturally. Teaching children how to pray will mold them to become responsible and mature Christians. Prayer, after all, is a good foundation of moral values.
