While the original Borderlands game is a first-person shooter game in which players complete the game's story mode by earning loot and killing enemies, "Tales from the Borderland" features characters who don't have the same power as the Vault Hunters in "Borderlands" and "Borderlands 2."

As Alexa Ray Corriea from GameSpot writes, "Tales from the Borderlands is a Borderlands game, but Telltale has opened up Gearbox's Pandora in a way the original Borderlands games haven't and can't as shooters. Through exploration of the little people struggling in the shadows of Vault Hunters, you gain a deeper opportunities to explore the world."

Where in the Borderlands game players have the power to shoot up the whole planet of Pandora, "Tales of the Borderlands" is a whole different thing. "Traditional Borderlands games have you interacting with the world mostly through emptying the chambers of your various guns, but Telltale pretty much strips you of power save for your wit," Marty Sliva from IGN wrote.

Sliva has given the game a rating of 8.7 out of 10 while Corriea from GameSpot has given the game a 9 out of 10.
