'The Child in Time' Premiere, Cast News, Spoilers: New Trailer Shows Benedict Cumberbatch as Grieving Father

A new trailer for "The Child in Time" was released featuring Benedict Cumberbatch playing the grieving father.

The 43-second teaser published on YouTube by PBS' Masterpiece begins with Cumberbatch, who plays Stephen Lewis, playing with his daughter while going on a grocery errand.

When Cumberbatch's Stephen was paying, he notices that his daughter is missing from the shopping cart that he put her in. After searching for her daughter to no success, he comes home to his wife, Julie — portrayed by Kelly Mcdonald — and tells her what happened.

The loss of their only daughter leaves both Stephen and Julie ultimately heartbroken, as the trailer shows that both of them are haunted by the memories of when they still had her in their arms.

The trailer raised the question, "Can time heal all wounds?"

The 90-minute film based on Ian McEwan's award-winning 1987 novel, Deadline confirmed, will try to give an answer to the question, following how the loss of Stephen and Julie's daughter led to their separation.

The short film, set two years after the unfortunate incident, will also see how Stephen will find meaning in his life now that his daughter and wife are gone, along with his friends — Charles (Campbell Moore) and Thelma (Saskia Reeves) — who have moved to the countryside to have a life of their own.

In a previous interview with Variety, the executive producer for Pinewood Television –—Helen Gregory — praised the cast of "The Child in Time."

"I'm delighted to have such a talented cast join Benedict, Julian and the team and I'm very much looking forward to seeing them bring Stephen's script to screen," said Gregory.

Cumberbatch has taken many challenging roles, such as in "Hamlet" and "Atonement." However, this will be the first time that the "Sherlock" actor will take the character of a fraught father.

"The Child in Time" is slated to premiere on Masterpiece on PBS in 2018.
