The CW Is Developing a 'Sabrina, the Teenage Witch' Series as a 'Riverdale' Spin-Off

The popular 1990s television staple "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" is currently being developed by The CW as a spin-off to their hit mystery drama, "Riverdale."

Variety reports that the new series will be based on the "Archie Comics" series titled "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina."

It is said to reimagine the origin and adventures of the teenage witch, Sabrina, as a coming-of-age story set in a dark tone, tackling subjects like witchcraft, horror elements, and the occult. While she tries to balance out her dual nature as a half-witch and half-mortal, she will find herself battling against evil forces that will pose a threat to humanity.

The CW and Warner Bros. TV reportedly announced that it is going to be "dark drama in the horror genre" and that the series is going to take inspiration from horror films like "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist."

With all these said, it is safe to conclude that the potential series is going to be very different from the quirky 1996 series.

The original show, which starred Melissa Joan Hart as the titular character and a cat named Salem, aired between 1996 to 2003. It leaned towards the comedy genre.

Should the new project get the green light, it will be a companion series for "Riverdale," which stars KJ Apa as Archie, Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Lili Reinhart as Betty, and Camila Mendes as Veronica.

It will be executive produced by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, alongside Lee Toland Krieger, Jon Goldwater, and Berlanti Production's Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

"The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" will also be joining The CW's impressive roster of comic book adaptations, including DC Comics' "Arrow," "The Flash," "Supergirl," and "Legends of Tomorrow."

The actress for the lead role has not been chosen at this point, nor has the script been finalized. However, The CW hopes to air it sometime between 2018 to 2019.
