'The Girl on the Train' Release Date and Spoilers: Makers of the Film Retells the Book As It Is; Cast and Plot Details

Producer Marc Platt opens how they did a cinematic retelling of 'The Girl on the Train'

The bestseller book "The Girl on the Train" is now expected to hit cinemas on October. Written by Paula Hawkins, the book has stayed at the number one spot as the bestselling book in New York for thirteen weeks.

The Making of the Film

There's an interesting detail about how the movie was born. By the time it hit bookstore shelves, screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson already turned in a copy of the screenplay to Dreamworks Pictures. Then, producer Marc Platt immediately obtained the rights for the movie.

Platt told LA Times that the story is a contemporary suspense drama-slash-thriller. He also added that the story revolves around the imperfect lives of three women. This element made it more realistic for readers and soon-to-be viewers of the film as it represents real-life situations which test our characters as humans.

Rachel, The Girl on the Train

The heart of the story is the character named as Rachel, a woman who is having a hard time dealing with her emotions. She jumped into alcohol addiction after her marriage breakup. This role is portrayed by Emily Blunt.

Rachel's notable routine in the movie is her train commute. By travelling through the same path every day, she gets a glimpse of the area where she used to live with her husband. The painful part of her daily commute is the idea that her husband is already living with his new wife on the same house she's peering into every day.

While doing so, Rachel also daydreams of having the same life as the couple who lives near her house before. The woman on the neighborhood is Megan (portrayed by Haley Bennet).

The mysteries of the story starts when Megan went missing right after Rachel experienced a blackout. A series of events took place after Rachel discovered Megan's affair with another guy. According to Wilson, the film's purpose is to re-tell the events in the book just as how it was narrated. He mentioned of putting cinematic elements for the story to effectively show the mysteries behind each character.

Wilson emphasized the part when Rachel tells another character that she is "afraid of herself." This is the point where the story finds its climax. Hawkins told Entertainment Weekly why she chose to stay out of the screenwriting. She says that the project is not hers and that it would be better to be written according to how the film-makers want to craft the story.

"The Girl on the Train" is directed by Tate Taylor and is slated to show on October 7.
